Make your furniture last longer with Champion Carpet and Upholstery Care
Furniture can be expensive, and we want it to last a nice long time before we need to replace it again. This can be even more tricky when we have children, pets or messing guests. Here are a few ideas to keeping your furniture looking and smelling great as well as lasting longer.
You get the furniture that you pay for
Higher quality furniture is going to last longer than cheap or poor quality. As with many things in life, you get what you pay for. There is a good balance here as well- shop around and learn the differences in what constitutes higher quality. It could be hardware and construction, type of wood and stains, thickness of padding, strength of fabric and more.
The Great Carpet and Upholstery Cover Up
Area rugs in high traffic areas, tablecloths and upholstery covers are one way to protect certain pieces of furniture. Carpet runners near entryways will protect carpets from higher amounts of foot traffic. Tablecloths can protect from scratches, moisture rings and dings. And chair and couch covers can protect fabrics from spills, food and other junk from falling into crevices and staining the fabric. Are we talking about plastic? No, you can certainly still be tasteful.
Scotchgard is more than cool science
Scotchgard protection is a sprayable product that adds a layer of waterproof spill safety. Any accidents, including pet urine, vomit, wine and more can be easily blotted up or wiped clean. Scotchgard is a very cost effective option as well, usually costing pennies on the dollar to replacing furniture or even deep cleaning it. You can apply Scotchgard to carpet, sofas, dining room chairs and even throw pillows.
Keep it clean
Regularly vacuuming (once a week) is good for carpet and upholstery to keep grit, grease and grime from building up. Small sand particles brought in on shoes can cause tiny irreparable tears in fabrics and fibers. Consider a no shoe policy in your home to reduce sand, and lots of other junk you don't want resting on your ottoman, out. Along with regular vacuuming, steam cleaning the upholstery and carpet should be done at least once a year.
Furniture Placement
If a piece of furniture is being used more than another, consider rearranging it to reduce its overuse while another matching piece is being neglected. Rotate or flip cushions when possible to keep them even and prevent slow spots. Likewise, if a chair is in direct sunlight, move it, or put up a curtain to avoid sun-bleaching.
Warranty Program Controversy
We say controversy here because we hear of as many "pros" as we do "cons". The postives include having a replacement of an expensive piece of furniture when there has been extensive damage that is not able to be repaired. On the other hand, warranties can be expensive and not pay out due to numerous restrictions.
"Most furniture manufacturers offer a 1 to 10 year warranty on upholstered and leather covered products. Â These warranties are generally pro-rated and only protect against defects in the workmanship. Â Seam separation usually carries a 1-year warranty where wood frames and springs upwards to 10 years depending on the manufacturer. Â These types of problems happen in less than 2% of all furniture that is produced so the chances of making a manufacturers warranty claim is low. Consumers are far more likely to have an accident at home that alters the way the furniture looks, feels, or even smells."
