Upholstery suffers from wear and tear just like any other area of your home. Some people go to drastic measures to prolong the life of their furniture, but covering everything with plastic is not an ideal solution. While nothing lasts forever, there are some tips and tricks available to ensure that your upholstery lasts a good long time.

Vacuum

Just like with carpet, regular vacuuming is essential for extending the life span of your furniture. Dirt and dust and other particles settle into the fabrics and need to be regularly cleaned. Vacuuming on a weekly basis helps because it keeps those particles from settling too far into the fabric. Quick and frequent removal is vital.

Rotation

If at all possible, rotate your upholstery. Turn the cushions around. Switch the drapes. This will allow the items to wear evenly and extend their good looks. Not everything can be reversed, but if you are able then you should.

Prevention

Before purchasing new furniture or décor, research preventative products and make smart purchases. Scotch Guard is a popular method of pre-treating fabric so that it is stain resistant. Some fabrics, such as microfiber, are extraordinarily easy to clean.

Covers

While you won't want to cover up every piece, using a furniture cover or adding a fabric (like a blanket) over an item can also be used for additional protection.

Windows

Be aware of how sunlight enters your home and where the rays hit. Any piece of fabric will begin to fade and experience damage if exposed to prolonged sunlight. Use blinds or curtains during the bright parts of the day or when you aren't at home.
