#ChampionMom - How to Lower Stress This Holiday Season
Friday November 25, 2016
Oh the holiday season! This is by far one of the busiest times of the year for us Champion Moms. We are occupied with preparing our home for parties and incoming guests. We spend hours decorating the house and wrapping gifts. We even plan whole days centered on making Christmas cookies and other holiday treats. All of this can make for an overwhelming month. We seldom put ourselves as a priority normally, let alone during the holidays. However, we are an extremely important part of our families. As we tend to everyone else’s needs, ours need to be cared for as well. How can we lower our stress during the holiday season? Here are a few easy ways to take time for you and relieve some of that stress.
- The 5-minute Time Out
You don’t have to set aside an entire day to yourself to recharge your batteries. Trying to “Take a day off” can be almost impossible, especially with a family. So instead try the 5-minute timeout. When things are getting a bit too overwhelming, make sure the children are safe and occupied and then retreat to a quiet place for just 5 minutes. Take time to breathe in and out and “reset” yourself. You can do this multiple times throughout the day as needed. It’s amazing what a difference this simple practice can make in relieving stress and reenergizing yourself so you can take on the rest of your day.
- Sleep
Sleep can be hard to come by, especially this time of year. Prioritizing your sleep is crucial for your health. Quality sleep improves your brain functionality, promotes healing, boosts your immune system, and supports your emotional well-being. Adults are encouraged to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep each day. If you are having a hard time falling asleep, try doing a relaxing activity before bed such as reading or sipping a cup of hot tea. Try to avoid “screen time” as this causes your brain to be stimulated and prevents it from shutting down for the day.
- Opening & Closing Your Day
Much like the 5-minute time out, finding quiet time for you can be so incredibly beneficial. Consider waking up 15-30 minutes before the rest of the house and make yourself a cup of coffee or tea. Spend time waking up and planning for the day before the hectic adventure begins. This will help set your day up for success and positive productivity. Likewise, do the same after the kids go to bed and before you fall asleep. Create space and time for you to reflect on the day before you shut down for the evening.
- Exercise
Exercise is a great way to relieve stress. Through physical activity, endorphins are released which act as analgesics and relieve pain. This creates a feeling of euphoria similar to morphine. Not only does it make your body feel great, but also helps boost your self-esteem. Knowing that you are working towards being healthy improves your morale and increases physical strength. If exercise is not really your thing, try going for a relaxing walk instead.
You work hard to take care of your family, but you have needs too. Take time for yourself to help ease the stress of the season and continue to be the Champion Mom you are!
