Why You Should Clean Your Mattress After Being Sick
Sunday May 10, 2020
When you’re sick, chances are you spend a lot of time sleeping in bed and being miserable. Unfortunately, those germs that you’re hoping to shed from your body can find refuge in your bed’s mattress, lying in wait for your spouse or to possibly even re-infect you.
As you get over a flu or cold, fever sweats, phlegm, and mucus are another uncomfortable reality that makes for a total mess. As such, here are cleaning tips to consider for your bed the next time you are sick.
Let the sun shine—UV rays from direct sunlight have a great potential for killing germs. Your first step, if you can, take your mattress outside into the backyard to clean it on a warm, not humid day. (The humidity can make the mattress moist which becomes a breeding ground for more germs.) If you can’t take your mattress outside, then open up the windows and the blinds in your bedroom and leave it exposed to direct sunlight for as long as possible.
Dust and steam—Next, you need to get rid of all the dust and dust mites that have accumulated. You can do this by using the upholstery attachment for your vacuum cleaner and be sure to get down into the crevices of the mattress. After you complete that step, sprinkle baking soda over the mattress and use a garment steamer to clean the surface of the mattress.
Disinfect and dry—Your last steps should be to get a good antibacterial disinfectant for the mattress. While some might think bleach is a good idea, it’s a little too strong for what you are planning. Dilute the disinfectant according to the instructions and use a lightly damp towel to clean the mattress. Do not saturate the mattress with liquid. This can just cause mold and mildew. After you are done, allow the mattress to dry thoroughly before you bring it back inside.
These steps will help you get the exterior of your mattress clean and disinfected. Unfortunately, it may not do the deep cleaning that you need to get down into the mattress and remove germs. To do this, you should look for a professional cleaning company that offers mattress cleaning options as they have the tools you will need to get rid of those really pesky, deeply embedded germs.
