How to Tackle Five Normal Carpet Stains

Despite your best efforts, carpet stains will always occur. It is also possible for an unexpected mishap to taint its appearance no matter how carefully you take precautions.

However, it’s often possible to remove the stain and clean the carpet. By following these effective methods, you can handle your next carpet mishap with ease and worry less about having to remove the entire carpet.

Here are five common, but totally doable, carpet stain removal techniques:

Gum

Patience is the most important element when removing gum from carpets. Apply a dry-cleaning solvent such as Goof Off to remove the gum. Use a dull object to scrape away as much as you can. As soon as the solvent has softened the carpet, remove the gum from the carpet with a white cotton cloth and repeat the process until the gum is completely gone.

Wine or Coffee

Blot the liquid gently with a white cotton cloth as soon as possible. Use a clean sponge to apply 4 cups of water, 1 tablespoon dish soap, and 1/4 cup white vinegar. After the stain has worked for 5 to 10 minutes, soak the area with the mixture again. Use a clean cloth to wipe again, without rubbing. Keep repeating these steps until the stain is gone.

Nail Polish

No matter what you do, don't rub the stain. This will not only cause the stain to be pushed further into the carpet, but it will also damage the fibers. Apply a non-acetone nail polish to the stain and wipe or blot it. Should the stain remain, you will need to call a carpet cleaning company.

Blood

Blot the stain with a white cotton cloth after applying a small amount of cold water. Do not use hot water because it will set the blood stain. Rinse thoroughly again and again until it disappears.

Urine

White cotton cloth should be used to blot the urine. You can neutralize uric acid by spraying the area with one part white vinegar and one part water. To remove the stain, mix a teaspoon of clear, mild, nonbleach laundry detergent with 4 cups of water. To absorb the water, wash the area with water and press a clean cloth against it. If necessary, repeat these steps.
