Commercial Cleaning – Keeping Your Pet-Friendly Office Clean
Tuesday September 8, 2020
There’s a growing trend in offices across the country of allowing employees to bring their pets with them. Of course, service animals have been allowed for decades, but now emotional companion animals are more common.
Many offices are allowing employees to bring their pets because they have found it actually improves productivity and increases employee morale as they don’t have to worry about their dogs feeling alone at home. But if your office is allowing this, then chances are you are going to have to deal with more maintenance on your office.
Here are some things you need to do to keep your pet-friendly office clean:
- Get a moisture-resistant flooring — If you allow pets in your office, then you are going to have to accept that there will be accidents. To help prevent the flooring from becoming ruined, you need to start with the right flooring. Easy clean-up would be with hardwood floors or tile. However, pet urine can still get underneath the cracks and cause odors. If you get carpet, make sure it has a moisture barrier that prevents liquids from getting underneath and making bigger problems.
- Clean immediately — If one of your office pets does have an accident, then you need to make sure to clean it immediately. Keep spot cleaner on hand that also cuts down on odors. If a pet can smell the urine in the carpet, then they are more likely to pee there again to “mark territory.†Get a spot cleaner that not only handles the stain but also cuts down on the scent to prevent repeat offenders.
- Clean regularly — Finally, you need to get regular professional cleaning of your carpet to keep it fresh and looking new. (Generally speaking, at least 2 to 4 times a year is optimal.) But it’s also important to vacuum daily to prevent pet hair and dander from accumulating.
If your office is considering allowing employee pets in the building, you may be surprised at some of the positive benefits that you will find. But it is also important to lay down ground rules and have a plan in place for how you will keep your carpets looking nice and clean.
