Dog may be man’s best friend, but they oftentimes aren’t the best friend of your home. Even the most attentive pet owners sometimes have to deal with accidents from their favorite pooches.

One thing, however, you do not want to do is ignore these puddles of pee because they will cause stains that will ruin your carpets and the padding underneath. With that in mind,

Here are a few ways to get dog pee out of your carpets:

1. Soak it up — The first thing you want to do is soak up as much of the urine as you can. One of the best ways is to put down several layers of paper towels and then stand on top of it with all of your weight. This bears down on the urine and gets up as much as possible.

2. Rinse and spray — Next, you will want to rinse the spot with water and then spray it with a cleanser. There are many products on the market right now that will clean the stain and also get rid of the odor, so the dog won’t pee there again. Another, non-chemical option is to spray it with vinegar. Vinegar can kill the microbes in the urine and also disinfect the area and cover the smell as well as clean the stain without harmful ingredients.

3. Add Baking Soda — Once you’ve thoroughly covered the spot with vinegar, pour baking soda over the area. (If you remember your middle school science, then you know it will start to foam.) Cover this with a few paper towels and let it sit overnight. The next day, you can wipe it up with towels and it should be stain-free.
