Champion Mom - Playing with Your Kids

For many of us, our happiest moments of childhood are those times we were allowed to play and explore the world, both physically and with our kid’s imagination. But as adults, we have forgotten that child-like sense of wonder and the fact that playing isn’t something kids do on their own or with other kids.

Sure, there is a lot to be said for spending time on your own or socializing with other children your own age. But children also crave the attention of parents and want to have these experiences with you.

Here are a few ideas about play and how it can increase your bond with your child:

  • Don’t try to schedule it — Playing isn’t something that can be put on a timetable in between chores and work duties. It should be spontaneous. Give the child the opportunity to express when they want to play and be open to the idea yourself.

Yes, you need to teach the child boundaries that you can’t drop everything to go outside and play because you have responsibilities. But, if you do this too often, you run the risk of turning into the father from the song “Cat’s in the Cradle” who never found time to play with his kid. Find a healthy balance in your life with your child.

  • Go outside — With our world so trapped in TV and computer screens, it’s important to get your kids fresh air and enjoy the outdoors with them. So, go out and play in the yard. You don’t need elaborate playground equipment. Just run around for a while playing tag or throw a ball or a frisbee to each other.

If you do have a playground near you, don’t just take them and turn them loose while you stay on your cellphone. Instead, get on the equipment with them and run around. Push them on a swing. Play in the dirt and teach your kid it’s ok to get a little dirty sometimes. They’ll love you for it.

  • Inside time is important too — Play can take many forms and inside play time is a very positive experience. Many families try to make traditions like Family Game Night and this is a great idea. But also, sit down at odd times of the day and color with your child or play with modeling clay.

You can also do a puzzle together, play a simple game like checkers or Go Fish. And don’t forget that reading can also be a form of play together. Read a story to your child but also allow them to use their imagination to create their own stories.

Playing with your child isn’t just an important activity for them. It will help you bond closer with your kid, providing both of you with memories that will last a lifetime. And it will also keep you young at heart, something we could all use these days.
