Champion Mom: Keeping Your Kids Moving This Summer

Summer is here, and for moms like us, that can be a crazy time. For some, it’s trying to plan activities to keep the kids from getting bored. But for a lot of us, it’s about getting our kids up off the couch and away from the TV, video games, and cell phones.

With so much on our plate, it can be hard to get our creative minds in gear. That’s where we step in to help you out.

For those of us who want our couch potatoes active, here are a few ideas for how to get your kids moving this summer:

• Workout Together — One of the best ways to get your kids active and get fit yourself is to exercise together. There are lots of good cardio workouts that you can stream online that are designed for parents and kids. Some of our favorites include “Let’s get moving” and “No-Equipment at Home Workout With Kids” from Mamatrainer.

• Dance! — Kids love music and dance is just a natural progression. You can try learning how to dance formally (like a salsa) or just turn on the music and bouncing around for a while until they collapse from exhaustion. One option is the “30-Minute Cardio Latin Dance Workout.”

• Yoga — Exercise and activity doesn’t have to be all excitement and running around. It can also be very mellow and calming as with yoga activities. There are many online yoga videos that you can do with your kids, but our favorite is “Nap Time 20: Yoga Flow.” These exercises also help your kids develop better breathing techniques, posture, and stretching.

• Virtual PE — When schools in England shut down for COVID-19, Joe Wicks set up a virtual PE classroom on YouTube to help keep kids active at home. You can check out his YouTube Playlist here.

By doing these activities now, you are instilling lifelong practices in your child that will serve them well. Exercising and getting active will hopefully keep them active over time and helping them to live long and happy lives.
