Champion Mom: Halloween Fun Without All the Sugar
Monday October 7, 2019
If you have kids, then you know how much they love Halloween. The whole concept of dressing up in crazy costumes and chowing down on candy can be pure heaven for a child. But for you, the idea of that kind of a sugar rush can be just as scary as the monsters and ghouls that the kids dress up as.
Instead of loading up on sugar this year, here are suggestions for Halloween activities without all of the sugar:
- Pumpkin Carving — This is a time-honored tradition that you can do on Halloween night instead of trick-or-treating. Today, there are hundreds of pumpkin carving templates you can buy or download for free that let you carve jack-o-lanterns from the simple to the incredibly complex. For really young kids who may not need to handle carving tools, you can buy a supply of paint and brushes from your local craft store and have fun painting the pumpkins instead.
- Orchards, Pumpkin Patches, and Cornfields — If you want your kids to get outside without going door-to-door, then try one of these prime autumn locations. Many local farms will actually host “fall festivals” with activities such as corn mazes or apple cider tastings. Regardless of which you choose, getting out with your kids will be a perfect alternative.
- Movie Marathon — You don’t have to cue up the Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Friday the 13th for a Halloween movie marathon. There are plenty of “spooky” movies that you can share with your kids and tweens, such as Disney’s Halloweentown or Twitches You can also check out the FreeForm network that has family friendly Halloween movies like The Addams Family, Paranorman, and, of course, the perennial favorite—Hocus Pocus.
- Build Your Own Monster — If you want something healthier for your kids to eat on Halloween, make monster pizzas. Let each child build their own pizza and cook it at home. That way, you can add healthy vegetables and create monster faces on the pizzas complete with big eyes, scars, and giant fangs.
Halloween doesn’t have to be all about the candy rush. There are plenty of activities that you can have with your kids without loading them up with unhealthy sugar levels.
