Champion Mom - Going Beyond the Chore Chart

Chores are a fact of life. And yet most kids hate doing them. That’s not right! What we should be doing is finding ways to make chores fun or at least more interesting and less painful. That way, kids can learn how to be helpful to their family in a positive way, rather than being forced to do something that makes no sense to them.

Kids learn to do chores so that they learn how to take responsibility for their actions. Picking up after themselves, cleaning their rooms, putting away toys… these are all things that kids can make a mess of if left alone. When a child learns to do chores, they learn to be responsible for keeping their things organized and tidy. They also learn to follow instructions, complete projects or tasks, and to take ownership for the things around them.

If you want your kids to do their chores—and do them well—you’re going to need to make them exciting. To motivate your kids to really engage with their chores and see the benefits, you’re going to have to give them an incentive to work quickly and efficiently.

Getting chores accomplished is just as much about making chores relevant as it is about making them interesting. Kids need to understand exactly how chores fit into their overall lives, so scheduling and building in a little structured fun can make the difference between kids complaining about chores and seeing the value of them.

It’s not a sweeping cultural change that we’re proposing, nor is this system going to work for every child. But the point is that you shouldn’t let your child avoid chores just because they want to fool around a bit before they start their homework or get ready for bed. Take away their screen time and replace it with chores, and watch how quickly they learn how to work more quickly!

The bottom line is this: If the chore isn’t fun for kids, then it isn’t fun for anyone. So the goal of a chore system should be to make housework fun and exciting.
