Champion Clean: Just How Dirty is Your Sofa?

When it comes to cleanliness, most of us figure that we have it covered. We shower regularly, do our laundry when needed, and sweep, mop, and vacuum the house often. But there is one area that many of us don’t think about when it comes to cleaning in your home—namely your sofa and other furniture.

It’s the area you spend the most time while at home, but probably the area you clean the least. So, let’s take a look at just how dirty your sofa is and what you can do to clean it thoroughly.

Why is your sofa so dirty?

When you come home from a hard day at work, chances are the first thing you do is flop down on the couch and try to relax a little. While sitting on the couch, we watch TV. Some of us even eat an occasional meal or snack on the sofa. (Admit it, you do!) All of that has an impact on your sofa’s cleanliness.

Sweat and body oils can get into the fabric of your sofa just as easily as food crumbs and stains can. If you have pets, then chances are you also have animal hair and dander on the sofa.

Do you use aerosol sprays like air fresheners? Those don’t just stay in the air—it also soaks into the sofa. All of this can add up, over time, to a really dirty couch.

How do you keep your sofa clean?

There are a few different ways to keep your sofa nice and clean, depending on your overall needs. These include:

  • For short term issues and “quick cleans,” always vacuum your furniture when you vacuum your floors. Get down under the cushions and flip them over if possible.
  • If you spill something on your sofa, get the spill cleaned up quickly. Keep fabric cleaner on hand for these types of spills.
  • If you have access to a steam cleaner, do a deep clean every two to three months. If you don’t have access, consider hiring a professional cleaning company to come in once or twice a year. This kind of deep cleaning will not only keep your couch clean, it will also help prolong the life of the furniture.

Keeping your furniture clean isn’t just a sanitary issue. Removing allergens, such as dust and mold, can also help to keep you and your family healthy. And regular upkeep of your furniture can also make sure that it lasts for years to come.
