Carpet Care: Scary Carpet Cleaning Myths You Need to Know

One of the beauties of the Internet is the fact that you can find out information on almost anything. Unfortunately, this also means you can get bombarded with a lot of misinformation that can cause you problems.

Myths about carpet cleaning abound on the web. There are several stories out there about “home” remedies for carpet stains and other care tips that can actually not only do nothing, but in some cases, it can damage your flooring.

Here are some of the most common myths that you need to know about carpet care:

  1. Vacuuming — First, let’s talk about vacuuming myths. Vacuuming should be done at least once a week. In high-traffic areas such as entryways, you should really do this daily. But some will say that you can damage the carpet by cleaning too often. This is not true. All carpets (even new ones), can stand to be vacuumed to get up accumulated grime. Even if the carpet looks clean, there may be dirt and dust hidden in the fibers that will only show up when it builds up too much.

  1. Vinegar — You will hear this one a lot when it comes to cleaning your carpet. The problem is that it actually shows no real signs of working. Vinegar will disinfect surfaces and you can use it on hardwood floors to get up spills, but it won’t actually get out carpet stains. If you add it with baking soda (as some sites suggest), then you could wind up with a paste that is hard to clean and can cause skin irritation without doing a thing to the stain.

  1. Other Home Remedies — There are a lot of other suggestions you will hear about how to remove stains, including water, dish soap, and even hair spray and ammonia. These won’t get out stains and, in some cases, can actually make them worse. Hair spray can accumulate and leave a residue and ammonia is caustic and can cause a lot of damage.

If you have a major stain in your carpet, then these home remedies not only won’t get out the stain, but they can actually be damaging to your carpet and even you. The best suggestion is to clean your carpet often and, if you do get a major stain, consider using a professional cleaning service.
