Carpet Care: Holidays Are Here! Does Your Tile Floor Pass the White Sock Test?

When choosing the flooring for home or office, many people elect to go with a hard-wood style—be it wood, tile, or laminate—because of its durability and the relative ease with which you can clean it.

However, as you are getting ready for the holiday season, both your home and business are going to be getting more and more traffic from family, friends, and customers. But just how clean are your floors? Are they clean enough to pass the “white sock” test? Let’s see what you can do to make them even cleaner.

If you have ever looked at your freshly mopped floors and thought, “Now that’s clean,” well, you better think again. The reality is that mopping may clean the surface, but ultimately you are just sloshing around dirty water after a while.

One way to tell just how clean your floors are is to walk around them in a pair of white socks. When you are done, check and see if the socks are still white. We’re betting that they will be an off shade of gray thanks to built-up grime that mops may not get rid of. But even that isn’t a clear sign of a clean floor. Bacteria can still lurk unseen and, especially in kitchens and breakrooms, can lead to health problems. (Here’s a big hint: If you follow the 5-second rule, DON’T! That food has bacteria on it as soon as it hits the ground.)

So, what should you do if you are getting your place ready for the holidays and need an extra clean floor to make a good impression? There are a few options.

One of those options is to invest in an extractor. This sprays the floor with clean water and then removes it once it is dirty and stores the dirty water in a separate tank from the clean. This way, there is no moving dirty water around on your floor.

If you don’t want to invest in such a system, then you should consider getting a professional cleaning from a company that uses similar technology. This way, you can ensure that your routine cleanings are getting your floors clean enough to pass the white sock test.
