3 Big Fat Carpet Myths

three big fat carpet myths

  1. Carpet cleaning is only needed when you get a stain

Your carpet is the home for more than just dirt. Bacteria and germs, indoor and outdoor pollutants, pesticides, mites and more are in and on your carpets. Allergies and asthma can be caused by these chemicals and cleaning can help prevent or reduce those.

Sand and dirt in your carpet also act like tiny scissors, grinding into the carpets and causing damage to the fibers. Vacuuming helps to get up the dirt and even allergy causing items, but it doesn't sanitize the carpet like hot water extraction carpet cleaning does. Additionally, vacuuming doesn't remove odor or tobacco smoke residue.

2. All carpet cleaning methods are the same

All carpet cleaning methods use some water, even when the word 'dry' is used, although the amount of water varies. Some people believe that hot water will damage your carpet, and this is not true. In fact, it is the most recommended way to clean carpet.

'Dry Cleaning' your carpets includes a few different methods. A cleaning agent is added to the carpet and then vacuumed up. Dry foam is a shampoo that will dry and then be vacuumed up. It isn't very effective and can leave a residue. Think about the concept of dry shampoo- it is applied and appears to refresh the hair, but it isn't really cleaning it.

Dry compound application is another 'dry cleaning' method for carpet cleaning, but it is not very effective either. A product is applied to the carpet and absorbs and attracts dirt and other pollutants. After it absorbs these items, it is vacuumed up.

Dry cleaning methods do allows for immediate use of the space as no drying is required, but none of the dry methods provide a deep clean that goes through the carpet back and into the padding, where many stains and odors can live.

Hot water extraction carpet cleaning is the approved method for carpet cleaning by the IICRC and is the method Champion Carpet and Upholstery Care uses. The carpets are pre-treated in high traffic, heavily soiled and stained areas and then hot water and a cleaning solution are used to clean the carpets. The hot water dissolves dirt and destroys mites and bacteria while the cleaning solution destroys grime, odors and removes stains.

3. All carpet cleaning companies are the same.

Other than the methods they use, skill set and pricing is also a differentiator when it comes to carpet cleaning. Truck mounted steam cleaning is the most powerful carpet cleaning method as it is able to heat the water to high temperatures and provide superior suction to extract the water and pollutants from the carpet.

And there is more than just fancy equipment, the technicians need to know the proper use of the machinery as well as the correct solutions and treatments for specific stains and carpet or fabric types. Technicians are trained in carpet grooming and application to prevent areas from being missed or over saturated. As members of the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification, we have high level of skill and knowledge. Our team has completed their rigorous training and certification process.

There are also several companies that use marketing tactics to get a 'foot in the door' and then ask for additional money for services that should be normally included in a professional carpet cleaning. Before taking a 'deal', see if it is too good to be true by asking for all the terms and conditions in writing before the work has started. Check their credentials and customer reviews on a variety of sites.
