#ChampionMom - Best Advice for New Homeowners
Monday October 15, 2018
Welcome to the wonderful world of new home ownership. Whether this is your first time with us or you are an old pro at moving into a new house, there are a few things that you need to do to make sure that your time in the new home gets off to a good start.
Here’s our list of the top things to do when moving into a new home:
Clean and Repair
I know, this one sounds like a crazy idea. Didn’t the old owners clean before they left? Actually, you have no idea if they did or not. So the first thing you need to do is a deep cleaning of the whole house before you start bringing in heavy furniture that you will have to move later.
I’d suggest hiring a professional crew to come in and clean all of your carpets and flooring. But you may also need to do some touch-up work on the paint and some other basic repairs before you move in.
Call the Exterminator
Have your house sprayed before you move in. If you have to, you might even want to have them do a major spraying like a bug bomb to get rid of any critters that may be hiding in the corners of the attic.
Change the Locks
When you take possession of the house, you are supposed to get all of the house keys from the previous owner. But how do you know you really got them all? They could have given copies to friends and family; you don’t want extra copies of your house keys floating around. That’s why it’s a good idea to get the locks changed.
Change Your Mailing Address
This is also a good time to head down to your local post office and put in a change of address form so that you can get all of your mail. If there are specific bills that you know need to be delivered immediately, go ahead and update your address with them so you don't have any delays.
Create a Maintenance Schedule
Now that you have a lot of things to take care of yourself (lawn, HVAC, sprinkler system, etc.), it’s a good idea to create a schedule to make sure that you know when you need to do your maintenance so that these things stay in good shape for the future.
Home ownership can be exciting, but at the same time, it can seem a little overwhelming. By taking the time to do a few things early on, you will be getting off on the right foot and ready to enjoy your home for years to come.
